Tim's Journey

One day, about three years after my diagnosis, I went mountain-biking and tried a jump over a rock, which I had done many times before. When I landed there was a lot of weight on my left hand, which was the one more affected by my symptoms.

Danny's Journey

Talking to my children about my condition is trickier since they are so young. My younger daughter probably has no recollection of me pre-diagnosis; my older son does remember that I used to be healthier, and there was a moment when he realized what was going on.

Julia's Journey

Getting my diagnosis was a formative moment for me. Clearly something was going on there. This isn’t to say that I was delighted with it, but it didn’t feel like the world was coming to an end, either. There was an inner voice that said to me: there’s something good for you in it, you’re going to make it work for you.

Albert's Journey

Right from the start I made a conscious decision to be open about my diagnosis. I talked this through with my wife and she was on board. I decided I wasn’t going to be coy about my Parkinson’s, it’s no use. Eventually people will know, they will see me deteriorate, shaking, falling over, dropping things – isn’t it better that they know right away so they’re not taken by surprise a few years down the road?

Sarah's Journey

I can’t say I don’t resent my husband’s disease. You spend your life planning your retirement, and the universe seems to have a plan of its own. My husband is still the same person, everything is still the same – only slower. As a wife, it’s hard to watch him decline. But I take comfort in remembering who he was.

There's no point ruminating on "what if's", on what my life would have been like if I didn't have Parkinson's. It is what it is, and I'm focused on making the most of every day.

I've found that a vegetarian diet, combined with moderate exercise and acupuncture, really makes a difference for me. Every person living with Parkinson's should make an effort to find what works best for them.
